Ride Directions

Beaverdam Park

The following are directions to the Fary’s Mill Rd entrance.

From The Southside: Take HRBT or M&M tunnel to the Peninsula. Continue on I-64 West. Take Route 17 North to the Coleman Bridge. There is a $4 toll for 4 axles northbound. Cross the bridge and continue on Route 17 North for about 17 miles to the stoplight at the intersection of Route 17, Fary's Mill Road (on right) & Ark Road (on left) - there is a Shell Station/convenience Store on the left. Turn right onto Fary's Mill Road and travel about 3 miles. You will cross a small bridge and the forest opens to a marsh area (you can see part of the lake on the right). The Park entrance is just past the bridge.

From Richmond area: From Interstate 64 East, take Exit 220, Route 33 - West Point. Travel about 14 miles (you will cross 2 draw bridges). Then turn right onto Route 14 East. Go about 6 miles to the stop sign then turn right onto Route 17 South. Go about 5.5 miles to the stoplight at the intersection of Route 17, Fary's Mill Road (on left) & Ark Road (on right) - there is a Shell Station/convenience Store on the right. Turn left onto Fary's Mill Road and travel about 3 miles. You will cross a small bridge and the forest opens to a marsh area (you can see part of the lake on the right). The Park entrance is just past the bridge.


Burkeville Trail Ride

From the East: 460 West to Crewe.  Travel Thru Crewe.  Speed limit goes back to 55mph.  Pass Large water tower on your Left. Shortly after that, at top of a slight hill, turn LEFT onto Rte 723(Lewiston Plank Road).  There's a county dump site on the corner and Nottoway Correctional Center is on other corner.  Once on Rte 723, drive 5.5 miles and Turn RIGHT onto Rte 625.  Drive 2 miles and Turn RIGHT onto Rte 624.  Drive 1 mile and Trail Ride is on LEFT.



Chowan Swamp Game Land (Sand Banks)

From North of the VA/NC border:

- HWY 58 heading to Suffolk, take the South exit HWY 13

- Turn RIGHT continuing on US-13 for 30 miles

- Turn RIGHT on Tinkham RD (Rural Route 1201)

- Turn RIGHT on Sandbanks Rd

- Travel 2.5 miles, park on LEFT

 

From South of the NC/VA border:

- At the intersection of intersection of HWY 17 and HWY 158, follow HWY 158 West for 30 miles

- Turn LEFT onto US-13

- In less than a mile turn RIGHT onto Tinkham RD (Rural Route 1201)

- At stop sign, turn RIGHT on Sandbanks Rd

- Travel 2.5 miles, park on LEFT

From Richmond VA area:  Take US 60 West thru Cumberland towards Amherst, turn Right on Rt 605 (Riverside Dr) at the James River Bridge.  Travel 7 miles to Park entrance.  Turn Left on Park Rd (Rt 606).  Horseshoe Campground is just past check-in at corner of Park Rd and Canoe Landing Rd.  Turn Left on Canoe Landing Rd and follow down hill towards river for Canoe Landing Primitive Horse Camping area.

Millstone Farm

From the Southside:  Take 64 West towards Richmond. Exit 205, Bottoms Bridge. Turn Right onto Rt 249 (New Kent Hwy). Take the first Left on Dispatch Rd. Take the first Right on Quaker Rd.  In 2.1 miles, turn Right on Cosby Mill Rd.  In 1.6 miles, turn Left at the stone gates into Millstone Farm.



Northwest River Park

From Suffolk area:  Take 58/664 to 64 towards High Rise Bridge in Chesapeake.  Exit 291B VA-168 South Chesapeake Expressway towards Great Bridge/Nags Head.  Exit 8B Hillcrest Parkway (last exit before toll).  Turn Right at light on Battlefield Blvd South by WaWa.  Turn Left on Indian Creek Rd by gas station.  Travel approximately 4 miles to Equestrian area entrance on right.  Main NWRP entrance is just past equestrian area. 

 

Petersburg National Battlefield

From eastern parts of VA:  Take 460 West thru Disputanta.  Continue on 460 West thru I-295 junction and Wagner Rd intersection.  Turn Right at light on Rt 109/Hickory Hill Rd by Hardees.  Follow road for only about 1/4 mile; turn Left at Park Headquarters (1539 Hickory Hill Rd).  There will be a little sign with horse on it under HQ sign.  Follow signs to parking area. 

From I-95 (near I-85 junction):  Take exit 49 to Rt 460 East.  Turn Left at light on Rt 109/Hickory Hill Rd by Hardees.  Follow road for only about 1/4 mile; turn Left at Park Headquarters (1539 Hickory Hill Rd).  There will be a little sign with horse on it under HQ sign.  Follow signs to parking area.

There is honor box at parking area ~ $5 or $15/annual pass.  There is a vault toilet at parking area.  No water on site ~ you must bring your own!

Staunton River State Park

From Eastern parts of VA:  Take Rt 58 West towards South Boston.  Turn Right on Rt 360.  Turn Right on Rt 344.  Follow 10 miles to Staunton River State Park entrance.  Equestrian campground is on left before park entrance.  Equestrian day use parking area is on your left just after entrance.

Tidewater Horse Trail

Take 58 West towards Suffolk.  Exit 460 West towards Petersburg.  Travel 19.4 miles to Ivor.  Just past Ivor Furniture, turn Right on Proctors Bridge Rd (Rt 616).  Travel 2.1 miles, make sharp Right on Warrique Rd (Rt 617).  Turn Left in entrance in 0.8 miles.

Pay fees in honor box.

From the Southside: Take HRBT or M&M tunnel to Peninsula. Continue on I-64 West. Take Croaker exit 231B. Go North on Rt 607 (Croaker Rd) for 1 mile.

Turn Right on Rt 606 (Riverview Rd). Go approximately 1.5 miles to park entrance on the Left. Horse trailer parking will be on your Left. 


From Richmond area:
Follow I-64 East to Croaker exit 231B. Follow directions above.

Pay fees at guard station upon entering.

From the Southside:  Take HRBT or M&M tunnel to Peninsula.  Continue on I-64 West.  Take Fort Eustis Blvd (Rt 105 East) exit 250B.  Turn Left off exit on Jefferson Ave.  Turn Right at light on Fort Eustis Blvd passing Newport News Park horse ring on left.  Turn Left on Rt 17 North.  Turn Right on Rt 704.  Go 1/2 mile, turn Left Rt 634.  Park at Surrender Field.
